A. AMAZON CUTS LOSSES BY 80%. The Internet retailer is only showing a pro forma profit, but discounts and free shipping are making real black ink more likely.

B. GOOGLE PROVIDES NEW RESEARCH TOOL. Now you can search and browse 4,000 continuously updated news sources. Go to http://Google.com and click on the News tab. Then type in the subject you are looking for. Google is still the world's number-one search site. See
http://www.nua.ie/surveys/index.cgi?f=VS&art_id=905358451&rel=true

C. WEB RESEARCHING JUST GOT EASIER. Paul Krupin has designed a Magic Search Word program to apply to search engines. The web site helps you narrow your search by selecting the right search words using pre-arranged, drop down menus. There are several word groups and they operate like ordering food from a Chinese menu, you just select one from column a, and one from column b and so forth.

Krupin has designed a set of search words especially for book publishers and now he is soliciting Beta testers. To get in on the testing, contact Krupin for full details. dircon@owt.com

E. HELP DAN POYNTER TO HELP OTHERS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND MAKE A LIVING WITH A BOOK. Dan is bringing his book writing-publishing-promoting message to groups of writers, publishers and professional speakers. Now he wants to approach other people with a book inside them: consultants, coaches, mentors, professionals, clergy, and businesspeople. Contact Dan if you know of a group that would profit from his programs. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com

F. BCH CHAIN STORE PROGRAM FALLS THROUGH. Book Clearing House, the upstate New York fulfillment firm is retracting an earlier announcement that they would represent clients' books to the major bookstore chains. BCH owner Nancy Smoller said "We'll continue trying to develop a practical way to better tap bookstores while avoiding all the pitfalls plaguing distributors and bad financial models leading to bankruptcy."

BCH and Bookmasters are two fulfillment houses that offer a quicker alternative to book distributors. Both have established a connection to Ingram, the largest wholesaler. See
http://parapub.com/supplier.cfm?
Each can make your books available to the bookstores. The next challenge is getting the chains and independents to order.

G. YAHOO REPORTS THAT OVER 30 PERCENT OF EMAIL ADDRESSES ARE CHANGED ANNUALLY, with users often forgetting to keep personal and commercial contacts.

H. POD PUBLISHER OFFER QUANTITY RUNS. Infinity Publishing has expanded into quantity printing and labeling it "POD Wholesale. See
http://www.podwholesale.com/pricing.htm
The books are manufactured on the same digital equipment.

"POD" is a method of doing business; it is not a method of printing. "POD" means making a copy of a book after it is ordered. Most POD printing is done one-at-a-time. On the other hand, short-run printing has been referred to as "PQN or Print Quantity Needed.

Most digital printers provide small-quantity runs. Most POD publishers sell books one-at-a-time. Infinity may be the first POD publisher to offer PQN printing.

ParaTips

B. INCREASE THE PUBLICITY POWER OF YOUR APPEARANCES. Publicity gets you more publicity, so it's wise to pump up your publicity power by sending a media release "AFTER" your bookstore appearance.

Why send the release after the fact?

1. You can include a picture, which increases the media release's chance
of being used—by more than seventy percent. (Tip: Use a unique "telling" picture and great caption for the ultimate effect.

2. You can include names and suburbs of people who attended, which will greatly multiply your chance of getting the release published in the suburban papers (tip: include the suburb in the headline for local papers).

3. You can use quotations from people who attended and weave them into the release.

ParaThoughts

WRITE FOR MAGAZINES. It is easier to re-slant and resell an existing article than to write a new one. Recycle your material.

Many authors start off by writing for magazines. This nonfiction writing enables them to bank material for their book, improve their writing style and build up a loyal readership.

Savvy magazine writers sell the same article over and over by re-slanting it for the next magazine and the next. Some articles are even sold simultaneously, unchanged.

Author-Publisher Gordon Burgett was driving home when he heard Paul Harvey tell a story about a lost cat that had found its way home over several hundred miles. The next day he read of a goat that found its way home. The next week, he read about “psi-trailing,” animals finding their way home even when their owners move. He began studying the phenomenon and wrote an article that he sold to one magazine. Since 1983, the article has been printed in different forms in 18 magazines and some 30 reprints (unchanged). Over the years, Gordon has sold over 1800 articles. This one article amounts to 2% of them.

Over 18,000 magazines are published in the United States according to the Magazine Publishers of America.

“Trade magazine editors want new ideas; they don’t require Pulitzer Prize winners.” —Mary Maurer, writer, in The Portable Writers’ Conference.

B. THE EUROPEAN UNION COMMISSIONERS HAVE ANNOUNCED that an agreement has been reached to adopt English as the preferred language for European communications, rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phased plan for what will be known as EuroEnglish (Euro for short).

In the first year, "s" will be used instead of the soft "c". Sertainly, sivil servants will resieve this news with joy. Also, the hard "c" will be replased with "k". Not only will this klear up konfusion, but typewriters kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced by "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20 per sent shorter.

In the third year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal` of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of silent "e"s in the languag is disgrasful, and they would go.

By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" by "z" and "w" by "v".

During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou", and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozerkombinations of leters.
