A. SELF-HELP BOOKS LEAD TO (MORE LUCRATIVE) SPEECHES. In 2001, 3,500 new self-help titles, amounting to 2.6% of all new titles, were published in the U.S., according to Simba Information, a market research firm that focuses on the publishing industry. The book provides the foundation for your business—and leads to other (higher paying) profit centers. See

http://www.forbes.com/2003/05/13/cx_da_selfhelp.html

B. INGRAM TIGHTENS THE SCREWS ON PUBLISHERS. Two years ago, Ingram (the largest trade wholesaler with five US warehouses) shed all publishers that did less than $15,000 in business in the previous two years. Now Ingram want 60% off, free freight and 90 day terms (from the end of the month—often 120 days to pay). According to Publishers weekly, some 1,000 publishers have elected to accept the new terms in order to stay with Ingram. The wholesaler is also demanding a set up fee for each title of $250 and an advertising fee of $400.

ParaTips

A. RECYCLED PAPER.  Worldwatch Institute says producing one ton of paper from waste uses about half the energy and water, produces 74% less air pollution and 34% less water pollution, saves 17 trees and creates more jobs compared to the same ton of paper made from virgin pulp. Banta eTips. http://www.banta.com/etips/index.html

B. BOOK COVERS SELL BOOKS. Don’t go cheap!  Book covers and titles sell books. I just made a presentation to a large association convention. The association purchased the presenter's books prior to the event and hosted their own bookstore. To my surprise most of the books had poor or pathetic looking book covers. The person running the bookstore agreed. Ironically, the two books that stood out were designed by Lightbourne (http://www.lightbourne.com ). You could watch the attendees walk down the display table and glance at some of the books but almost always picking up the better designed (book cover) books. I was told that these two books will be added to the association's web site products section.

C. INCREASE THE CHANCES THAT A NEWSPAPER WILL USE YOUR NEWS RELEASE, perhaps even quote it verbatim. Rather than just sending out a standard news release, try sending a "top ten" list along with the news release, says Jacqueline Deval in her new book, PUBLICIZE YOUR BOOK: An Insiders Guide to Getting Your Book the Publicity It Deserves.  The print media loves short punchy copy that can be used as filler. Examples include "Ten Great Ways to Save Money," "The Ten Secrets to Getting Ahead (that Your Boss Won't Tell You)," "The Ten Easy Ways to Lose Weight," "Ten Questions that Test Your Emotional IQ," and so on. Can you adapt this approach to your book or product? Just remember: The Top Ten list should offer some kind of promise to the reader, about ways to make his or her life better, easier, more convenient, more fun.  For more ideas about book promotion see

ParaThoughts

COLLABORATION. You may want a co-author, editor or ghostwriter to help you write your book. We all get some help.

According to a recent New York Times article, “On any given week, up to a half of the books on any non-fiction best-seller list are written by someone other than the name on the book.” The reason is simple: being an expert, an eyewitness, or a celebrity does not necessarily mean that one is also a skilled writer/communicator. Enter the ghostwriter.

You do not have to be a writer to be an author.

GHOSTS typically work for four kinds of clients. One is the expert, who writes to preserve and share his or her knowledge. Another has an extraordinary first-person experience to relate. The third is a celebrity or aspiring celebrity, who wants a book to memorialize or launch a career. The fourth has a fictional story to tell, but not the necessary storytelling skills.

You don't think Lee Iacocca wrote those two best-selling books all by himself? Iacocca is the author; it is his information, but he does not have time to be a writer.

The ghostwriter fills in for any skill or knowledge that the author lacks. In return for their expertise, ghosts are typically paid a cash fee plus a percentage of the author’s royalties. In return, the ghost takes a vow of perpetual silence.

If you are not a fully-skilled writer, but have expert knowledge or an extraordinary experience to share, or seek to launch or enhance your image, that’s when you should call a ghostwriter.

ParaHumor

Here is something funny we have found on books, writing, publishing, authors and/or words. If you have a laugh to share, please send it to DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com

FUTURE NOVELISTS: these are actual analogies and metaphors found in high school essays. From Joseph Nunes

--Shots rang out, as shots are wont to do.

--The plan was simple, like my brother-in-law Phil. But unlike Phil, this plan just might work.

--Young fighter had a hungry look, the kind you get from not eating for a while.

--"Oh, Jason, take me!" she panted, her breasts heaving like a college freshman on $1-a-beer night.

--He was as lame as a duck. Not the metaphorical lame duck, either, but a real duck that was actually lame. Maybe from stepping on a landmine or something.

--The Ballerina rose gracefully en pointe and extended one slender leg behind her, like a dog at a fire hydrant.

--It was an American tradition, like fathers chasing kids with power tools.

--He was deeply in love when she spoke, he thought he heard bells, as if she were a garbage truck backing up.

--She was as easy as the TV guide crossword.

--Her eyes were like limpid pools, only they had forgotten to put in any pH cleanser.

--She walked into my office like a centipede with 98 missing legs.

--Her voice had that tense grating quality, like a generation thermal paper fax machine that needed a band tightening.

--It hurt the way your tongue hurts after you accidentally staple it to the wall.
